WHO GOT THE BEAN ?

SINCE the Middle Ages,
the GALETTE DES ROIS or KING's CAKE
is a treat eaten on the 6th of January
to celebrate the EPIPHANY when the THREE KINGS
visited baby Jesus.

The galette is made of a multi-layered PUFF PASTRY
filled with a layer of almond FRANGIPANE.
The top layer is patterned AND baked
to a BEAUTIFUL golden color.
HIDDEN inside is a single PORCELAIN charm (a fève)
and the LUCKY person who finds it in his/her piece
is declared KING OF THE DAY
This is our FAVORITE celebration at home,
the day that REALLY marks the start of the NEW YEAR
now that the holiday vacations are OVER ...
This is a WONDERFUL and MAGICAL tradition
to PASS from GENERATION to GENERATION
or to START ...
In the GOOD OLD days in Quebec,
GIFTS were exchanged on LE JOUR DES ROIS,
NOT on Christmas day,
which was DEDICATED
to the BIRTH of Jesus ...
Check wth your LOCAL bakery or pastry shop !
They MIGHT offer this DELICIOUS treat on their shelves !

MAY you be the KING or QUEEN of the day !
