BLUE COWBOY BOOTS, PINK BEER AND A NEW FRIDA PAINTING ...

We just got back home this morning from going here and there and everywhere.

Summer is my favorite time of the year, it is a season of freedom, peace and happiness. During summer, I even dare take off my watch from my wrist where it usually lives 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, including sleep and bath time.

Summer is all about living outside to the max and using your senses to their full capacity.

Hearing insects noises in the field, an owl hooting during full moon, coyotes howling and yapping, a moose calling its mate, water gurgling in the pond, the boys whistling while working on a project together...

Tasting small wild sweet fruits in the forest, tiny baby carrots crunchy under your teeth, roasted corn melting in your mouth, big gulps of tropical iced-tea in a frosted glass...

Touching lamb's ears fuzzy grey leaves, the rough scales of a turtle basking in the sun, the bleached-out warm hair on my son's forehead, the smooth surface on the just-laid brown and white chicken eggs, the cool surface of the pool's turquoise water...

Smelling the grass freshly mowed after supper, charcoal bricks smoke hovering in the air, strawberry jam boiling in a large kettle, old-fashioned irrisistible tobacco-plant perfume...

Seeing the extraordinary mixture of colors in the flower garden early in the morning, the dogs and the cats playing together on the bed, the cousins sitting side by side on the deck fishing toads and sunfish in the large pond, the red-red sun setting down on the mountain after a dark storm, a tiny inch-worm walking up my arm, reminding me of Lowly Worm in Richard Scarry's books...

Simple things make summer a special time...

My friend Mario's blue cowboy boots...

A fresh glass of home-made raspberry beer served in a strawberry-decorated dollar-store glass...

The Mexican hue in my latest little Frida & Cat painting, available on eBay right now... I have tons of stuff to tell you all about but it won't fit in this post!

Stay tuned tomorrow for more ...

LAST FRIDAY, I MET ANGELS AT THE ZOO ...

It has been very busy the past few days. I have not even lifted a paintbrush nor turned on my laptop. And it has been very hot. And I like it all... Last Wednesday, my dad had an appointment with a doctor in Sherbrooke, which is about 2 hours away from where I live. He went with my mom for something pretty ordinary, no biggy, but it turned out he had a reaction to the procedure and had to be hospitalized in the emergency unit under tight observation. While doing the small surgery to his throat, they touched a vein with a needle and caused a local massive bleeding that almost prevented him from breathing. His neck swelled double its size and it was very painful. Very scary too. For him and for us... I drove to the hospital in a hurry, returned home, drove back again the day after with my mom to find out that he would be ok. What a rush! Then what a burden it lifted off our hearts. Dad does not need to go back to the hospital now, never would even be better. So, we took him back home and he is doing fine.

Friday, my sister-in-law Monique and the cousins Charlie and Jeanne came over for a visit and we all went to the Zoo de Granby and the Amazoo. The zoo is a terrific place to visit, improving each year its animals' habitat and it is simply beautiful. It is joined by the Amazoo, which is a swimming park with tropical settings, artificial beaches, a wave pool, a river where you can float on giant life-savers and more. We spent the day at the beach, had a pick-nick under false palm trees and all caught a wonderful tan. Around 4 p.m. we walked on bridges toward the zoo and toured it entirely, petting nurse sharks, marveling at snow leopards, viewing the games of the adorable meercats, laughing at the oh! so pink flamingoes scratching the bottom of the pond like our chicken, and so much more. Then, a miracle happened...

We entered a building and came face to face with a giant aquarium in which hippopotamus were swimming! And it was just marvelous and breathtaking! The way their place is build up they can be on land in a swell environment but they can also dive in a pond that has sides made of glass! I was like a kid, well, we all were, it was magical! Such a big animal, floating like a mermaid, light like a fairy, twirling through the water so close to us, we could have hugged them. And their eyes! And the way they looked at us underwater. They seemed to be so happy and were such entertainers! I could have stayed all day and watched them, the feeling it gave me was beyond anything I have experienced lately.

This sight on Friday afternoon glued a diamond on my heart that will shine forever. It was just so neat...

Saturday morning, we all drove through the US border, quite an experience for people not used to going through customs so small and so neighborly, and sat on Richford VT sidewalks to watch the 4th of July local parade. We had a great time and waved our US flag the best we could!

We spent the rest of the weekend by the pool, eating popsicles and by the fire the boys built at night eating marshmallows. My parents came to join us, we had a nice souper and we all slept outside Saturday night with zillions of stars to watch over us. We said goodbye to the gang yesterday night and feel so lucky to have spent such a nice few days en famille. Today was a slow day, hot, sticky, humid, just the way we like it when we need a reason to do nothing much because. All that to say, no new paintings nor art but tons of good feelings for inspiration. Tomorrow is another day, time to go to work!

Goodnight hippos, sleep tight my angels! I will never forget our meeting and will come back again soon...

FRIDA LA SIRENA ...

I worked all day on this painting, refusing to look outside at the beautiful day through the window, refusing the invitation from the guys to go take a swim in the pool in the afternoon, even declined a nice cool bottle of Margarita Cooler Francois offered me before supper...

Summer is a tough time to work inside for me. There is so much stuff to do outside, so many moments to take advantage of while the summer days are here. Summer is the perfect season to be a beach bum, spending most days in bathing suit barefoot, eating at the hours you are hungry, taking a nap when you feel sleepy, spending time doing not much more than be happy. But...

I find it very difficult to go back to my studio if I take a too long pause away from it. Of course, the more you work, the better you get, the faster you become, etc...

So, I am going half-way this summer and it will be perrrrfect! I will take the time to sniff the flowers when I feel like it, I will go and do stuff with Ulysse when we want to, I will maybe sleep a little later in the morning... In other words, I will do as I do each month of July and August. I will live and love every single moment of the season but to make up for it, I will try to be a little faster in my art, take decisions about colors and composition with my guts more than with my brain and will stay away from Popsicles and Space Bars so I can work with both hands instead of just one ;-)

Frida la Sirena is available on eBay for 99 cents! Yes, only 99 cents! I used string on this piece, aluminium foil and all kinds of paper. I think it turned out pretty good!

Hat, Flowers and Cats is also available for 99 cents, there was an error in the listing and I decided to put it back on eBay.

Ok! Now that I am done for the day, I will go and grab myself a nice Dulce de Leche Ice Cream bar and play Runescape on the net with Ulysse.

Ahhhhh! I wonder why I like summer vacations so much...

BIG-CHEEKS MEXICAN CHERUB ...

I had a little white card in my mailbox this morning. It tells you that you have a parcel at the post office or something urgent that needs your signature ... So I drove down the hill wondering what I was not expecting to expect... When I got there, the girl could not find it. We looked and looked and finally I noticed a HUGE box sitting in a corner. Youppi !!! It was addressed to me !!!

I took it back home with me, leaving the back door open because it would not fit. When I got home and opened it, I almost died and went to heaven!!!

My friend Sylvie, who has travelled around the world 12 times (well, I am exagerating here a bit) and who's been to Mexico many, many times, sent me the most EXTRAORDINAIRE folk art angel from the state of Guerrero in Mexico, famous for its woodcarvers. It has a wingspan of almost 3 feet and is 2 feet high. It is a monster! And I love its big-rosy cheeks, its sensual pouty red lips, its detailed wings. Oh! I am so happy, I just can't believe this gift! I immediately hung it on the stone wall in the entrance of our house so it is right in your face to greet you when you are arriving.

MERCI, SYVIE MON AMIE, MERCI, MERCI !!! She is currently travelling in Bolivia and probably will not read this post right away, but still...

TU ES UN AMOUR !!!
